 Scents in the Sky

It is time for a vacation? Want to get to your destination as peacefully as possible? If you anticipate and prepare for your travel problems,  you can save yourself a lot of stress. Flying can cause distress for a variety of physical and emotional reasons. Traveling may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and sinus congestion. It often brings on colds and flu if others on the plane are sick. And for some it wreaks havoc on their nervous systems causing anxiety, stress, nervousness, impatience, and panic attacks. The good news is that all of these issues can be offset with the proper use of pure essential oils. An aromatherapy mister or sniffing essential oils from a cloth could bring quick relief. To make a mist, add 15-20 drops of a Pure Essential Oil or Pure Essential Oil blend to 2 oz of distilled water in a fine mist bottle. Put top on, shake and it's done. 

As you read which oils are helpful for each of the symptoms, notice how many of them treat multiple problems. This will be helpful when choosing the oil or oils that best meet you needs.  

Nausea is not pleasant, for you, or the people sitting near you. If you are prone to it here are some essential oils that may help.  

Allspice: Warming, sense-enhancing, allspice has been known to reduce nausea. It is also used to enhance positive feelings and reduce stress and nervous exhaustion. It can lessen chills, congested coughs and bronchitis. The herb, allspice is named such because it is said to taste like a mix of cloves, juniper berries, cinnamon and black pepper. Similarly, it’s scent is a multi-layered spice.  

Basil: Basil is highly recommended to lessen nausea and may stop to impulse to vomit. Basil’s fresh herbaceous scent can help open up the sinuses, heighten focus, stimulate blood circulation and bring comfort to body and spirit. It can be used to help lift bad moods and fight anxiety, nervous tension, fear and headaches. 

Cinnamon: Hot and sweet; cinnamon oil is recommended to relieve nausea. It also warms, stimulates and revives tired nerves. It is often used to strengthen the immune system against colds and flu.  

Chamomile – Roman: This floral oil with bright apple-like undertone is recommended for restfulness and easing nervous tension. It is useful when fearful, frustrated and/or impatient. It is also used to reduce nausea and vomiting. This oil, in small amounts, is gentle enough for infants. This oil is very helpful when you want to sleep. 

Clove Bud:  Spicy, sweet oil that inspires the mind and memory; clove bud oil often eases queasiness, mental fatigue and nervous exhaustion. Its scent is warming, cheering, and welcoming and it know to bring cheer to an environment. It is especially comforting during the cold season, perhaps due to its reported expectorant, antiviral, and antibiotic qualities.  

Ginger: Spicy, hot and earthy, this oil energizes and warms It’s scent is also highly recommended to lessen nausea, stop vomiting, and ease and unsettled stomach. When used in blends it can also help protect against colds and flu. 

Lavender: Highly floral and mildly herbaceous, lavender is considered the most versatile essential oil. It often helps balance one’s energies: stimulating if tired, and relaxing if stressed. Lavender oil has been used to heal a host off ills, including nausea, depression; and feelings of fear, panic, anger, aggression, irritability and headaches. Lavender can also be helpful when you want a peaceful sleep.  

Lavandin Grosso: This oil is a cross between true lavender and spike lavender. It’s scent is similar to true lavender, but more herbaceous. It has similar healing properties as lavender, although it is more stimulating thus better suited for when you wish to remain awake. 

Nutmeg:  This spice oil should be used sparingly. In blends it often helps ease nausea and indigestion. It's scent may also lift fatigue.  

Peppermint:  Cool and Clean, Peppermint has been known to aid in headaches, nervous stress, nausea and the common cold. It can act as an expectorant and therefore is used to treat coughs. It really opens up sinuses and may strengthen the immune system to protect against colds and flu. 

Sandalwood Oil:  This rich, musky essential oil is known for its calming and grounding effects. It can also be useful when treating nausea, stress, nervous tension, fear and depression. 

Spearmint:  Cool and minty, this essential oil is the gentlest of all the mints. In small amounts it is suitable for children. It works to lessen nausea, and as a decongestant and expectorant. Its scent is said to be comforting to the head, thus it is often employed for tension and migraine headaches. 

To help relieve sinus congestion and/or give added protection from coldand flu try these essential oils:

Basil: Read description under Nausea. Also helps with Anxiety & Stress. 

Eucalyptus: Clean, camphoraceous Eucalyptus oil is great for helping to ease headaches and respiratory ails. It helps open up sinuses and can be used to strengthen the immune system again common ills. It’s scent can also help lift fatigue. 

Ginger: Read description under Nausea. Peppermint: Read description under Nausea.  

Pine Needle: With a fresh, clean turpentine-like aroma, pine needle oil works as an expectorant, antiseptic, and restorative. It’s used to help with fatigue and stress, while strengthening the immune system against colds and flu. It’s scent opens up sinuses and may help with motivation and concentration.

Teatree: Teatree is a clean, camphoraceous oil. Much of what is known about the healing properties of teatree oil was learned from its long history of use by the aboriginal people of Australia. Scientifically it is shown to be active against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It acts as an expectorant and offers protection against colds and flu.  

Flying often brings on anxiety and stress. To combat this, try the following essential oils: 

Allspice: Read description under Nausea. Also helps with colds and chills.  

Basil: Read description under Nausea. Also helps with Sinus problems. 

Bergamot: Bergamot is that familiar citrus scent found in Earl Grey tea. It has a spicy undertone and adds a fresh note to blends. Bergamot oil is employed to reduce fear, anger, frustration, irritability, anxiety and depression. It is said to help with confidence, concentration, and cheer.  

Chamomile – Roman: Read description under Nausea. Also helps with Sleep. 

Clary Sage: Clary sage oil has also been recommended to help control anxiety levels in the body. It is recommended to help in cases of fear. It’s scent is said to create a sense of well-being. It can also help us drift into sleep and can induce colorful dreams. 

Frankincense: Calming and focusing frankincense is a warm, sweet, and rich resin. It often acts to slow and deepen breathing making it perfect for meditation. It can stimulate creativity and enlightenment. It is used to ease feelings of anxiety, grief, fear, panic and disconnection. 

Geranium: Dry with a rosy undertone, geranium oil is wonderful for helping to balance female hormones. It has deodorizing properties and can be very relaxing. It is recommended to help treat many emotional issues including anxiety and depression. It is said to increase feelings of self-worth.

Mandarin: This light, sweet, citrus oil is extremely relaxing. It is a very gentle oil, and one of the few suitable for children. It’s scent is used to aid depression, anxiety, and feelings of emptiness. It recommended for treating insomnia. 

Pettigrain:  From the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree, this mesmerizing scent was created. Pettigrain oil has a bright floral-citrus aroma, similar to the very costly Neroli oil, which is made from the blossoms of the same tree. It is very calming and can help create a positive mood. It is used to reduce anger, frustration, pessimism and exhaustion. When used correctly it can be helpful in cases of insomnia.

Ylang Ylang: This intense floral can help balance emotions; either stimulating or soothing depending on one’s needs. It often helps ease nervous conditions such as depression and stress. It is recommended to help increase confidence and happiness; while reducing feelings of fear, dejection, anger, and guilt. In the correct dosage it can also help aid in the good night’s sleep.  

Some people what to sleep while on a plane, but find it difficult. If that is the case, these oils may help:
