 Have a Cool Summer!

Hot summer days can be brutal. Heat and humidity can lead to fatigue, faintness and irritability. Not only that, but dust sticks to sweaty skin leaving us feeling filthy. The proper use of aromatherapy can perform like a portable cooler and purifier in one. As with herbs, some essential oils are hot (such as: clove, ginger, & black pepper) and others are cold. The long list of cooling oils includes: Basil, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Pine Needle, Peppermint, Spearmint, and many more. There are quite a few ways to employ these in everyday life. The most convenient method is a mist. It's easy to keep a small sprayer in your bag or pocket and simply spritz as needed. Many find this to cool them down, wake them up, and refresh instantly. Other aromatherapy techniques include: showering with a cooling soap; making a deodorizing lotion, or soaking in a cool bath. In this issue you will learn about cooling, refreshing essential oils and ways to use them.

Cooling Essential Oils
Basil: Basil's fresh, herbaceous scent can heighten focus, reduce nausea, stimulate blood circulation and bring comfort to body and spirit while helping to cool you down. It is also used to help lift bad moods. This oil is great to use when studying, in an important meeting or interview, or anytime you want to remain sharp and alert. When properly diluted, it can help relieve muscle pain. It is also considered an aphrodisiac. In folklore, the herb Basil is thought to bring money.

Cypress: This cooling, strengthening oil has a clean, evergreen scent. It is cleansing and comforting. It aroma is recommended to ease nervous tension and stress. In massage oils, it's great for circulation. It is used to reduce cellulites and muscle cramps so it is great to use in soaps, baths, and massage oils.  

Eucalyptus: Clean, camphoraceous Eucalyptus oil is great for helping to ease headaches and respiratory ails. It helps open up sinuses, is used to strengthen the immune system again common ills, and its scent can help lift fatigue. It great to use for cooling and deodorizing purposes.

Lavandin Grosso: This oil is a cross between true lavender and spike lavender. Its scent is similar to true lavender, but more herbaceous. It is more stimulating and cooling than lavender. Like lavender, it can help to heal a host off ills, including migraine headaches, anxiety; depression; and feelings of fear, anger, aggression, and irritability. It's also great to ease sore muscles when used in massage oils and baths.

Rosemary:Rosemary is the herb of love and remembrance. The essential oil is fresh and cooling. It can help with memory and concentration as it has been said to strengthen both the brain and the nervous system. Emotionally it is used to increase confidence, energy, clarity, structure, and awareness. In skin care, it has been used to fade varicose veins. It has also been used to: help relieve fluid retention, aid the immune system in fighting infections, relieve headaches, fight nervous exhaustion, and bring relief to respiratory ailments.

Pine Needle: With a fresh, cleansing turpentine-like aroma, pine needle oil works as an expectorant, deodorant, and restorative. It's used to help lift fatigue and stress and can strengthen the immune system. Its scent is used to help with motivation, concentration and patience. It is also nice and cooling. 

Peppermint: Cool, clean peppermint essential oil boosts energy and has been known to ease headaches, nervous stress, nausea and the common cold. It definitely wakes us up and bring instant cool/coldness. Emotionally, it is recommended to ease mental fatigue and feelings of helplessness while increasing self-acceptance and vitality. When used in soaps, shampoos, and misters it can really help cool us down in the summertime. When used in massage oils it can ease muscle pain and improve circulation. Spearmint: Cool and minty, this essential oil is the gentlest of all the mints. It works as a decongestant, and expectorant. Its scent is said to be comforting to the head, thus it is often employed for tension and migraine headaches.

Teatree: Teatree is a clean, camphoraceous oil. Much of what is known about the healing properties of teatree oil was learned from its long history of use by the aboriginal people of Australia. Scientifically it is shown to be active against bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It works to rid the air of disease, while acting as expectorant. It can be used in skin care to treat oily skin (not for sensitive skin).

Thyme: This fresh, cooling herbal oil can be employed to treat headaches, sinusitis, and as a preventative against colds and flu.
Cooling Aromatherapy Methods
To make a mist: Mix 15-20 drops of an essential oil or essential oil blend to 2oz of distilled water in a fine mist spray bottle. (Spritz on body & face as needed)
To make soap: Add 50-75  drops to 8oz of liquid castile soap for a cooling soap   
Add 1-3 drops to a cool bath (start with one)
Mix a drop or two into a dollop of unscented  lotion and use on skin.
Use about 15-20 drops with 2oz of unscented oil (like jojoba oil) or lotion for a cooling, muscle-easing massage.
Rub one drop over body right when you get out of the shower mixing it with the water already on your skin.
